Project Description

The project “RIVERHA: OPTIMIZATION AND SCALING OF HYALURONIC ACID PRODUCTION FROM WHEY” aims to develop a high-efficiency production method through bacterial biosynthesis with Streptococcus strains cultivated in whey. This method seeks to achieve a 20% yield of hyaluronic acid production from dry whey.

Duration

The project duration is 24 months, with the possibility of an extension of up to 6 additional months.

Main Activities

The project activities include:

  • Prototyping: Development of prototypes for the standardization of the culture medium with whey and evaluation of Streptococcus thermophilus strains to optimize bacterial biomass production and hyaluronic acid biosynthesis.
  • Experimental Tests: Standardization of protocols for the precipitation and isolation of hyaluronic acid, analysis of its purity and molecular weight, and drawing conclusions about its performance in new scaling bioprocesses.
  • Intellectual Property Protection: Expert advice to develop an intellectual property protection strategy and operate a licensing-based business model.
  • Technical Validation: Development of a pre-industrial scaling pilot using a 100-liter bioreactor to optimize biosynthesis efficiency as production scale increases.
  • Financing Strategy: Seeking funding in Spain to strengthen and develop a process licensing strategy focused on the international expansion of the high-efficiency production method.
